Paper sculpture

Some people have an amazing talent for taking the thing most artists take for granted, paper, and turning it into a three dimensional artwork within itself.

Megan Brain just blows my mind with the amount of detail she can achieve with her cutouts, and the textures she can create just with paper. http://meganbrain.com/

And my friend Shelly showed me some examples of quilling, which turns curled strips of paper into something so amazing. http://iron-maiden-art.deviantart.com/

Even just using plain paper people have created incredible castles. Credit to Wataru Itou 1, and Ginger Li who took the photo but never named the original artist 2.

Peter Callesen can do castles as well, but what has really impressed me about his work was that he usually incorporates the process of making the cutout into the artwork itself. Often the base of his sculpture is the sheet of paper the cutouts were made from. There's an interesting mix of 2D and 3D. It was nearly impossible to choose just one. http://www.petercallesen.com/

And speaking of intriguing bases, Su Blackwell makes the most incredible paper sculptures that come to life out of old books. And though this may seem a sacrilege to other bibliophiles like myself, look at what she did with an old copy of Alice In Wonderland! Also this image pops up a lot on tumbler, so please don't forget to source it: http://www.sublackwell.co.uk/

As far as cutout detail goes though you'd be hard pressed to top Tahiti Pearson. The intricacy in his work is mind-boggling. http://tahitipehrson.com/
